The 1847 tragedy. Thousands of Irish migrants flee their homeland, plagued by the Great Famine, in search of a new life in Canada. Living in insalubrity in overcrowded ships, those who survived the crossing are confronted to typhus, diphteria and smallpox. To prevent contagion, they were placed in quarantine on an island named Grosse Isle. 5,000 people were buried that year, 1847.
